HTHSCI 3MU3 – Music, Health, & The Community is getting some well-deserved attention. The program, which begain as a 4th year initiative several years ago, has evolved into a 3rd year course with HealthSci alum Chelsea MacKinnon at the helm, in partnership with schools in the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board, and a number of seniors’ residences in the city. The course is open to Music students as well, and develops students’ knowledge in the social determinants of health, intergenerational and aging issues, music cognition and health impacts of music, along with skills in facilitation, leadership, and community engagement; at the same time, elementary school students learn to play the ukulele and perform for and with seniors in their communities.
Check out this great story (with video) that is featured on the Faculty of Health Sciences news page, and congratulations to Chelsea on her nomination for a YWCA Young Woman of Distinction Award!
